HISTORY
William (Bill) McClung was born and raised in Waynesboro, Va. When he was in the 7th grade, he worked at Dairy Queen. That's where he made his first ever ice cream cone! Later in life when he was going to college in West Virginia, he started dating Barbara, his future wife. She took him home to Pennsylvania to meet her parents. From the first day that her dad met William, he called him Willy! The name stuck, and William's future father-in-law called him Willy until the day he passed away in 1994. Every time Willy went to Pennsylvania, his father-in-law would say, "Willy, run out and get me some custard!" He loved just plain vanilla ice cream from a local ice cream shop. In 1994, Willy was traveling on Interstate 81 and stopped in Winchester. He saw this long line of people and wondered what they were doing. After stopping to check it out, he discovered that they were waiting in line for ice cream! This brought back a lot of memories and inspired Willy. After a year and a half of planning, "Willy's Frozen Favorites" opened in Waynesboro, VA. He later changed the name to "Willy's Ice Cream."
TODAY
Today, Willy's Ice Cream is owned and operated by Carrie Beth McClung, the daughter of Willy. She purchased Willy’s from her parents in 2012 after 19 years of teaching. She takes pride in the business and runs it in her father’s memory, as he passed away in 2015. She hopes to one day pass it on to her children, Madison and Jacob. This season is Willy's Ice Cream's 29th year of operation! It has been voted the Best Ice Cream Shop in the Shenandoah Valley many times through the years. Known for its delicious soft-serve ice cream and specialty desserts, it’s a place worth visiting!
